IRONMAN 70.3 Greece 2026: an October weekend Messinia looks forward to all year

On Sunday 25 October 2026, the PPC IRONMAN 70.3 Costa Navarino returns to western Messinia. Athletes from more than 60 countries will swim, ride and run past olive groves, sand dunes and protected wetlands.

For those of us who live here, IRONMAN is more than a race. It is the weekend when Navarino Bay, Gialova and Pylos fill with flags, cheering crowds and people who travelled far to test their limits.

This guide covers what you need to know: the courses, the schedule, practical tips and where to stay so you can enjoy IRONMAN Greece 2026 in calm surroundings by the sea.

The three courses of IRONMAN 70.3 Costa Navarino

“70.3” is the total distance in miles, roughly 113 km across three disciplines raced back to back.

Discipline Distance Where
Swim 1.9 km In the calm waters of Gialova Bay, starting and finishing on the beach in front of W Costa Navarino
Bike 90 km Along Messinian country roads, past olive groves, vineyards and archaeological sites
Run 21.1 km Through Gialova village and around Divari Lagoon, a Natura 2000 protected area

The swim is the race’s signature moment. According to the organisers, athletes voted it the best swim of 2026 in the Europe, Middle East and Africa region.

The shaded, pine-lined run with lagoon views is a favourite spot for spectators. Mild October temperatures give athletes good conditions for a fast race.

Practical tips for athletes and supporters

If you’re racing

  • Arrive by Thursday or Friday. A practice swim and an easy spin on the bike help you get used to the water and the roads.
  • Sleep somewhere quiet. The race starts at 08:00 and transition opens at 06:00, so it’s an early alarm.
  • Plan your recovery. After the finish, a dip in the sea, fresh local food and proper rest make all the difference.

If you’re cheering

  • Pick spots along the run course. Gialova and Divari Lagoon give you several chances to see your athlete pass.
  • Allow for road closures. Some roads close on Sunday for the bike leg, so set off early.
  • Bring a light jacket. October mornings are cool, while the midday sun is still warm.

Turn IRONMAN into a Messinia holiday

It’s worth adding two or three days to your trip. October in Messinia means warm sea, fewer crowds and mild weather for exploring.

  • Palace of Nestor. One of the best-preserved Mycenaean palaces, a short drive from Marathopoli.
  • Voidokilia Beach and Gialova Lagoon. The omega-shaped bay and the bird-rich wetland are perfect for an easy post-race walk.
  • Pylos and Niokastro. Stroll the Three Admirals Square and the castle overlooking Navarino Bay.
  • Methoni. Its Venetian castle, with the Bourtzi tower standing in the sea, is one of the most striking in the Peloponnese.
  • Local flavours. Messinian olive oil, fresh fish at the tavernas by Marathopoli harbour and wine from nearby vineyards.
