Unique Herbs of Messinia
The significance of the herbs has been well established over the years, when even the modern medicine is sometimes impressed by the power that these herbs hold.
We present six species that thrive in the borders of Peloponnese, along with their ‘’magical’’ uses.
Greek Knapweed
It is a plant that we can still find in abundance as it is extremely adaptable. It can survive in some of the most inhospitable environments such a rocky slope or in a high altitude.
Its pharmaceutical significance is to be noted, as it is both antioxidant as well as fungicidal.
Laconian Thyme
A rare plant that until today remains unknown. It can be found in the fallow fields and rocky shrub land of the southeastern part of Peloponnese.
It is not yet profoundly studied but we can expect an interest towards it, as it is believed to have significant antimicrobial and digestive uses.
Taygetus Mountain Tea
It grows on the rocky terrain of Greece’s mountains. When freshly-cut it extracts an intense aroma that is said to evoke a sense of euphoria.
It helps digestion, softens a cough and acts miracles against colds. It is a widely used drink that is usually combined with sage and mint.
Oregano
Probably the most important ingredient of the Greek cuisine. Greek gastronomy wouldn’t be the same without it.
Apart from its tasty nature oregano has also healing powers.
It is considered a natural antibiotic as well as a powerful antioxidant. It may improve gut health and treat yeast infections.
Rosemary
We can easily trace this plant as its appearance as well as its intense aroma draws your attention.
It is usually referred to as ‘’The Great Nervous System Healer’’ due its rich source of antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds. It also boosts the immune system and improves memory.
Sage
It is commonly believed that the plant spirit in sage is released through burning, producing a woody aroma that transforms the energetic field of the space it occupies, revitalizing heavy energy.
In addition, sage has analgesic effects, boosts circulation, has lipolytic action and it is a great hormonal regulator ( especially in women).
